Savage Beauty is a perch where a cluster of moths are fluttering and feasting on a piece of flesh. With time the flesh has rotted and drained out, moths have started to rest in repose.
It’s a work for the artist to seek and reveal erotic needs under the skin. He felt so restrained with sexuality while growing up, and the sexual emotions were rotting inside him. Withholding the pain of being suppressed is like when moths are being cocooned. To some extent, the sewing process was a spiritual journey to the artist, who enjoyed an enormous amount of the tactile and olfactory sensation. It was a dominant position to pierce and sew a piece of meat, but the artist identified with the meat and wished to switch to the submissive.
Furthermore, the artist intended to create an immersive and collective experience, allowing audiences to directly confront the presence of the work; to smell the stench and see the embroidery molded within. Other species are also invited, they seem to have more enjoyment than human beings. A quote from Cesar A. Cruz, “Art should comfort the disturbed, and disturb the comfortable.”
